The introduction of the Ruck and the Tackle to an U8 team is a challenging progression for both players and coaches. It can be a time when players feel the sport has changed and may not be for them or they may feel frustrated trying to master this new skill.
When the coaching team of Robbie, Dean, Ian, Iain, Karl, Pete, Scott, Tim, Tony and Vik came together in late August to agree the plan for the season, the main goals were the safe introduction of these core skills but also maintaining motivation on the team.
Each week players were encouraged to think and make decisions for themselves and as the season went on, our boys really began to see the merit of communication with each other. Over the course of the season, mantras like the 'Sutton Wall' developed as the boys began to feel a pride in their team and started to lead and organise themselves in both attack and defence. In the end, our U8 squad came through 9 out of 9 tournaments unbeaten.
It has been so rewarding for both coaches and parents to see the team spirit and camaraderie grow with our boys. We are very proud to have started and ended this challenging year with a core squad of 35 and this fantastic group of kids will begin their U9 season well positioned for the next step.
Congratulations to the boys, the coaching team and also to the parents for their encouragement and support throughout the season.
